Herman Groot received both his BSc. (2014) and his MSc.-degree (2017) in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. During his Master phase he broadened his knowledge by finalizing space related elective courses at the Aerospace Engineering faculty of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. He strives to broaden his image processing skills to be able to apply it in the space branch of Aerospace Engineering. As such, he would eagerly want to acquire hands-on experience in Image Processing applications which are applicable to space applications as well. Fittingly, he finalized his internship on cloud detection using satellite images at the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, during early 2016. Next, his master graduation project addressed generating 3D reconstructions of entire camera-captured environments and compared several techniques of doing so. Additionally, he improved the reconstruction by applying point cloud registration, using the intrinsically noisy image-based point clouds.

Currently, he is working on person re-identification, which is the first topic of his PhD research. This topic involves all aspects required to track a person through multiple cameras in order to collect a long-term trajectory of a person’s activity in the context of smart cities. The second topic of the research is in behavior analysis, which ultimately results in a notification when suspicious behavior is detected. This is in order to maintain public safety and can essentially be used directly to influence the environment, e.g. significantly increasing light pole light intensity. These two topics are part of the PSCRIMSON project and as soon as this project finishes, he is planning to focus more on robotics due to his space interests.
